There are some special things you must remember when training your German Shepherd.

You must take a variety of things into account when training your dog.. Herding and guarding are two of the German Shepherd breeding characteristics. These factors will influence the way you should train your German Shepherd, or Alsation as they were called by the British at
the time of World War II.

German Shepherds are strong, handsome dogs and it’s important, as with any dog but in
particular with big, intelligent dogs, to ensure they are properly trained.

German Shepherds are willing to learn once you communicate properly with them, showing them that you mean business. Make it clear your dog knows who’s boss when you’re training him.

Ensure you are not letting your dog dominate you and not the other way round. Make sure your dog knows you are the master . Gaining respect will derive from having a dog that’s properly trained.

You need to ensure your dog can socialize properly. German Shepherds need to have the boundaries set out for them and know them clearly. German Shepherds will not necessarily respond well to reprimanding behaviour due to their own personalities.

By beginning early with your dog training you will get the best results from your German Shepherd.

Good commands and good leash training is important if you want to properly train your dog on the leash.

Make sure you get a dog that obeys on the ’sit’ command by giving rewards, not punishing.

German Shepherds of course are well known as guard dogs also and you should only embark on guard training after you have the basics, such as training your dog to ’sit’, ’stop’, ’stay’ etc rather than

trying to move directly into more complex commands, such as guarding. Just try and ensure your dog’s barking is for the right reason and so train carefully and comprehensively in this regard.

Stopping your dog biting is extremely important and requires some very clear behaviour on your part.

You will be rewarded by having a good dog that behaves well if you do the right training.
