The Labrador Retriever: How To Care For Them

The history of the Labrador Retriever is a long and complex one. Labrador Retrievers originated in Newfoundland, Canada as a smaller, shorthaired dog of many uses. They were then established with the English Kennel Club in England in the year 1904. From continued use as a gun dog to a guide dog for the deaf, the Labrador Retriever has definitely made its mark in history and is now known for being one of the most versatile and useful breeds of dog today.

Their appearance has remained generally the same throughout the years. It is a dog breed that is incredibly strong and powerful. They have a very short straight topcoat with a softer, waterproof undercoating. Their appearance is one of the most favored features of the Labrador Retrievers, but the most appealing aspect of all is their temperament. They are incredibly affectionate, friendly and energetic dogs, and because they are generally free of aggression they are ideal as family pets, even those with younger aged children.

Labrador Retrievers have quite an interesting history behind them. They were originally used for fishing, because they were so perfectly suited to the purpose. With their short, waterproof coat they were perfect to use for retrieving fish from the water because the fisherman need a dog that is not going to be pulling a lot of water with them back into the boat every retrieval. These dogs also are born with an excellent retrieving instinct so they do not need to have time spent on them for training in this area.

When the turn of the century hit, the way that Labrador Retrievers were being used was beginning to change, as they were starting to be used more as gun dogs than anything else. This was mainly because they had begun to be imported to the United States during the time of the First World War and when army officials recognized the potential that these dogs had to offer they took full advantage of it.
It is easy to see that the history of the Labrador Retriever is very long and significant. It is important for any potential Labrador Retriever owner to be educated not only on the history of these dogs but also on what your reasons are for choosing this breed.
