Pet Health Care at Halloween

Whilst everyone appreciates that Halloween is good fun for all the family, remember that your pets are also a part of the family and that their pet health care should be a consideration when you plan the festivities.

Remember that all the fun and noise associated with a Halloween party, if you are having one, can be distressing to cats and other older pets. If you will be having guests around for the evening, particularly rowdy children, find a quiet space where your pet feels comfortable to hide away and relax until the commotion is over.

Perhaps you might be using Halloween as an excuse to indulge in a few sweet treats, but don’t let your animals do the same, many sweets can be harmful to pet health care. Of course, the big example is that chocolate can actually kill dogs.

Similarly, dogs and cats might be attracted to playing with the wrappers of sweets and chocolates. As well as the obvious choking hazard that wrappers can present, if they are swallowed there could be internal damage to the digestive system and certainly some discomfort.

Many owners like to give their animals Halloween outfits to wear, this is ok provided they consider pet health care when doing so. If an animal is unable to breathe, bark, eat, drink, walk or go to the toilet comfortably because of its outfit then it will find the entire experience highly distressing and could become ill.

Lastly, bear in mind that it is not only pet health care which is under threat at Halloween if you have animals in the vicinity. Watch out for dogs which have become overexcited knocking over burning decorative candles and not only injuring themselves but causing a fire hazard too.
