Modern Vets Practices
The English word ‘Vet‘ is a short-hand version of ‘veterinary’ and refers to an animal healthcare professional. The derivation of the word is from the original latin word ‘veterinae’, with the literal meaning of working animals. The professional training program to become a vet is long and intensive, and many overlook the fact that the level of skill and ability to look after animals is no different from looking after humans. In the UK the pre-requisite to become a practising vet is an veterinary medicine degree (BVSc). Veterinary nurses also need qualifications in veterinary medicine.
Vets may choose to specialise in certain areas such as pets, farm animals or exotic animals. Some vets choose to specialise in production medicine where they will be helping farmers with the production of beef, dairy cattle, sheep etc. They may also practice equine medicine and help keep race or show horses healthy.
As well as developing specific specialities with particular types of animals, some vets might decide to focus on particular treatment pathways like surgical medicine or parasite research. Many more vets love the research element though and remain true to their education backgrounds and develop a passion for finding new treatments and cures.
Treating sick dogs and cats isn’t all a vet does though. Some of it is preventative such as inoculations, and some of it is to help prevent unwanted animals being created - neutering. Unfortunately, some procedures that are asked of vets are more for the benefit of the animal owners than the pet. One example of this is where a cat needs its sharp claws removing. Cat claws can do a lot of damage in a house because cats will not always use the scratching posts bought for them and so owners want the claws removed to protect their possessions.
Vets and Vet Clinics give a lot to the town or city in which they are located - indeed since a dog is often cited as man’s best friend, having a good vet on standby is a must.
