Is It Difficult to Install a Cat Flap Door?
If you have a pet cat you may decide that you want them to be able to come and go outside as they please. There are many advantages to this; first of all, your cat will enjoy its freedom and get some fresh air and exercise, but also, it will take care of its needs outside, so you won’t have to clean up its litter as often.
Regardless of the reason why you want to let your cat go out, you should have a cat door door installed, or you can install one yourself as well. This type of cat door will allow your cat to go out of the house at any time without requiring you to be present or interrupting your activities. Plus, installing a cat flap door isn’t incredibly difficult.
How to Install A Cat Flap Door
Installing a cat door door is doable by most people, so you might want to try it and save yourself the money that it takes to hire someone to do it. The first thing to do is to take some basic measurements with a ruler or some other device to see how big the door needs to be. Cats’ sizes vary greatly and you don’t want the door to be too big or too small for your cat; and if your cat is still young, consider how much it will grow in the future.
Next, tools and materials have to be purchased, if you don’t have them already; they can be found in most hardware stores without problem. Of course, this will depend on the type of door you want as well as your building skills (if you’re a novice, stick with the simplest), but they generally include a saw, sand paper, door fixing, and safety goggles. You can also draw the area to cut with a pencil so you have an easier time doing it.
Then, use the saw that you bought to cut out the door, starting from the inside and moving gradually to the outside, instead of the other way around. After cutting the door, use the sand paper to make the area as smooth as possible, as rough edges might hurt your cat when it uses the flap door. It’s a good idea to make the flap door just a big bigger than your cat’s expected maximum size so that it has a good slack for going through.
The flap fixings have to come with the flap as well as the screws that are needed to attach it safely to the door. After installing the flap door, it should go from one side to the other without any problem, and it shouldn’t fall down or make any strange noises when you use the door.
