How To Care For A Rabbit

With a gentle nature and a trusting personality a rabbit makes a great choice as a pet.Rabbits enjoy being petted, stroked and cuddled, even by children.Make sure that if you adopt a rabbit as a pet you look after it and ensure rabbit care is a priority in order for it to benefit from a long and happy life.Rabbits are easy to look after and make a great addition to any family. To ensure your rabbit is healthy and happy try and follow some of these great tips.

A rabbit needs several basics which you must provide. These are a hutch, bedding, food and space to run around.Make sure the hutch you buy has enough space to accommodate a full size rabbit, with space to run and stand. It should also be wide enough to allow the rabbit to hop at least four full hops in any direction.Plan out your hutch in zones, so there are separate areas in which the rabbit can play, sleep eat and go to the toilet.Don’t forget that if you have more than one rabbit the space should be increased accordingly. To ensure the rabbit is warm at night you must invest in a good quality bedding. When lining your hutch use newspaper which should then be covered with dust free straw.Look at the space in your garden and decide where the best location is for the hutch with your rabbit in mind, not you. It is not fair to place a rabbit in an area of prolonged, direct sunlight.Cover the hutch at night with a breathable fabric so the rabbit is not confronted with any night time predators such as foxes and cats.In addition to your hutch consider buying a run. Rabbits enjoy being allowed to hop around and a run provides them with a protective area in which to do this.

Nutrition is an important consideration when feeding your rabbit and they need to eat digestible and indigestible fibre.Rabbits digest their food twice, which is why this is important.Do try and avoid the mass market muesli type foods available as these can be high in sugar and starch which can lead to increased weight gain, obesity and even diabetes. To give your rabbit the very best chance in life feed it a specialist rabbit food product. It is easy to find a specialist pet food retailer, either online or on the high street. In addition to specialist food try and give your rabbit treats such as apple, banana, broccoli, celery, tomato, turnip and cabbage.

Following a few simple guidelines and understanding how to care for a rabbit before you actually adopt one will ensure you are a well prepared and competent owner.
