Facts On Yorkies

Originating from Yorkshire, England the Yorkshire Terrier is a popular dog in the ‘toy dog’ class. Standing only six to seven inches high, the terrier weighs around 7 pounds and has a life span of between 12 and 15 years.

The Yorkshire Terrier is believed to have ascended from Scotland and is genetically linked to other breeds such as the Skye Terrier, Manchester Terrier and Scottish Terrier although not the dogs that we see today. It was created by the working man in the 19th century to trap rodents including mice and rats. Over the years the breed has been miniaturized and is a now a well known choice for a ladies companion as they fit perfectly into a bag.

The Yorkshire Terriers coat is moderately long glossy, fine and silky in texture and many owners part the hair on their head to allow them to see and eat properly. Born with tan and black coats which changes as they age to steal blue and tan, in some countries, where it’s permitted, their tails are docked to medium length.

When investing in a Yorkshire Terrier, purchasers must be aware that they’re vunerable to several disorders. Some examples are Hypolglycemia, Patellar Luxation, Tracheal Collapse, Porto-Systemic Shunt and Retinal Dysphasia.

Common among small breed puppies, Hypoglycaemia is frequently misdiagnosed and even though it is easily treated if left untreated it may be fatal.

Patellar Luxation is a condition caused by the knee cap slipping out of its groove and although not deadly could potentially cause mild pain if left untreated.

Brought on by weight problems, age or sometimes inherited, Tracheal Collapse is the narrowing of the inner diameter of the trachea.

Essentially the most feared ailment by all Yorkie owners is Porto-Systemic Shunt which is an abnormal blood flow to the liver.

Retinal Dysphasia is generally present at birth and is an irregular development in the retina. Although typically inherited, it can also be acquired from the result of an infection.

That being said in general Yorkshire Terriers are actually excellent pets and companions and even with several disorders may lead a healthy and long life.
