A Guide To Yorkshire Terrier Grooming

Yorkshire Terriers make wonderful pets. They are small and so they are easy to pick up and get around, but they also make great watchdogs. They are obviously quite fragile and therefore are not the best protectors, but they are always alert and will notify you if there is any movement or noises that you may not be able to hear yourself. They truly make wonderful pets, even if there are children in the home.

They should be trained, just as with any other type of dog, but as long as you give them proper obedience training when they are young they will make not only an ideal pet but also a great companion. Just keep in mind that Yorkshire Terrier grooming is often considered as being a downfall to this breed, as they require a great deal more care and maintenance. As long as you are going to be willing and able to make time for this however, you should have no problems.
There are a few things in particular that are very important to remember when it comes to Yorkshire Terrier grooming. The first is choosing a shampoo. There are literally hundreds of different dog shampoos on the market today that you can choose from, but you do want to make sure that you choose the right one. Many people make the mistake of thinking that just because the Yorkie’s hair is similar to humans that they can use human shampoo, but this is a bad idea.

Human shampoo is much too strong for dogs, and will tend to leave their skin flaky and dry. You should try and get a tearless shampoo so that if you do ever accidentally get any in their eyes it will not hurt as much. Remember never to leave your puppy unattended in the bath, just as with a child, and make sure that you have everything you are going to need ready and standing by before you get the dog into the tub.
Proper and regular Yorkshire Terrier grooming is an essential duty when it comes to owning a Yorkie. Brushing and bathing in particular are important and should be done on a regular basis. Maintaining a Yorkshire Terrier puppy cut is another way to keep your pet clean and tangle free with little daily effort. Their teeth should also be cleaned frequently, and to keep their ears erect you will need to have them trimmed every few weeks. Most pet owners do not feel comfortable doing this clipping themselves, and so you should not be hesitant to take them to a professional for this.

Haircuts are also very important for this breed, and the best idea is to go to a professional groomer for the cut so that it turns out how you want it and you do not leave the dog with a butchered looking haircut. If you do so have the inclination then feel free, but it may take you a couple tries before you are satisfied with your own results.

Brushing, bathing, tooth cleaning and nail clipping are the most important parts of any Yorkshire Terrier grooming process. You will need the appropriate Yorkshire Terrier grooming supplies if you want to groom your Yorkie properly.
